Built 1934-36. Designed by Sir William A Stanier. Total Number Built - 191.
Introduced 1933. Stanier taper boilered development of "Patriot" Class. Classification 5XP.
(a) 45735 & 45736 Rebuilt in May and April 1942 respectively, with type 2A large taper boiler and double chimney and reclassified 6P.
In 1936-37 locos 45567/90/607/08/10/16/21/22/39/40/57 were fitted with sloping throatplate boilers in place of the original type. 45607/16/22 reverted to original boiler type in 1938.
45742 fitted with double chimney from 1940-1957. 45596 fitted with double chimney in 1961.

45552-45556, 45607-45654, 45665-45742 Built at London Midland & Scottish Railway's Crewe Works.
45655-45664 Built at London Midland & Scottish Railway's Derby Works.
45557-45606 Built at North British Locomotive Works, Glasgow.

Some locos carried a small Fowler tender.
The first loco withdrawn was 45637 Windward Islands in December 1952 after being involved in the Harrow accident along with Princess Class rebuilt loco 46202 Princess Anne. The first true withdrawal was 45609 Gilbert and Ellis Islands in September 1960. (see photo below). The last loco of the class was 45562 Alberta, withdrawn in November 1967. Some are preserved.
