Built at London Midland & Scottish Railway's Horwich & Crewe Works.

42818/22/24/25/29 rebuilt experimentally in 1931 with Lentz rotary cam poppet valves. Valve gear replaced by Reidinger rotary poppet valve gear in 1953.

The first withdrawals were made in July 1961 with 42864, 42893 and 42930 being condemmed. The last locos withdrawn were 42727 and 42942 in January 1967. Some are preserved.
