Introduced 1935. Stainier development of Fowler class 2-6-2 Tank design with taper boiler.

40083/97/114/139 Fitted with Type 6A boilers with longer firebox.
40142/48/63/67/69/203 Fitted with Type 6B boilers with larger barrel and superheater.

Number Series 40071-40209.

40185-40209 Built at London Midland & Scottish Railway's Crewe Works.

The first withdrawals were 40139 and 40169 in October 1959 and the last twelve locos of the class were withdrawn together in December 1962. None are preserved.
