LMS Fowler 2-6-2 Tank

Built 1930-32. Designed by
Sir Henry Fowler. Total Number Built - 70.

Introduced 1930. Fowler design, superheated with parallel boiler.

Developed from a design for a 0-6-2T authorised in 1928 but discarded because of weight distribution. Twenty were built with condensing apparatus, 15520-15539 (40021-40040), for working over Metropolitan widened lines to Moorgate, London.

Nine were modified with vacuum control for motor trains in 1935-39: 10, 20, 43, 56-61; No. 58 was replaced by 12 in March 1947; No. 21 had its gear removed in June 1944; two more were altered in 1954 Nos. 17 and 45.

Number Series 40001-40070.

Built as numbers 15500-15569, renumbered 1-70 in 1934.

Built at London Midland & Scottish Railway Derby Works.

The first withdrawal was 40005 in February 1959 and the last loco of the class, 40022 was withdrawn in December 1962. None are preserved.
