Built 1944-50. Designed by Charles B. Collett. Total Number Built - 259
(a) 4900 Introduced 1923. Collett Hall rebuild with 6' 0" driving wheels of Saint Class loco No. 2925 built 1907.
Remainder Introduced 1928. Modified version for new construction of Collett rebuilt Saint Class with 6' 0" driving wheels, higher pitched boiler, modified footplating and detail differences.
Hawksworth developed the class further when he introduced the Modified Hall Class in 1944.
4907/48/68/71/72, 5955/76/86, 6949/53/57 were converted to oil burning in the period June 1946 to May 1947 and renumbered 3903/02/00/01/04, 3950/51/54, 3955/53/52 respectively. All reconverted back to coal burning in the period September 1948 to April 1950 and renumbered back to original series.
The first withdrawal was made in April 1959 when 4900 was condemmed from Old Oak Common shed. The last locos withdrawn were 4920, 5971, 6923/32/37/51-53/56 in December 1965. Some are preserved.
