Introduced in January 1968, this prototype locomotive was built by two companies in the hope that the design would be adopted as the future standard type 5. The loco was fitted with highly sophisticated electronic power and control units. The loco, on loan to BR, was used on both the Eastern and London Midland Regions of the BR system, until withdrawn from service in January 1971. It was sold to Soviet Railways where it was used for research until 1988.
