Introduced in 1905, these two locos were built especially for freight use on the Newcastle Quayside branch of the NER, where steam traction was impossible due to tunnel sections and where steam blow-back was common. During the late 1950s, BR painted both locos in LNER Apple Green livery. Both locos were withdrawn in September 1964. Engine 26500 is preserved, originally at the Leicester Museum of Transport, it can now be seen at the National Railway Museum, York. The other loco 26501, was cut up by T.W. Ward, Choppington during 1966.
