Introduced in December 1955, this prototype locomotive used two high speed opposed diesel engines, the design eventually being used for the production Class 55 type 5 Deltic. The allocated number DP1 was never carried as was the original allocated name of Enterprise, the loco going under the name Deltic for all its life. The loco, on loan to BR, was used on many lines of the BR system, especially on the London Midland and Eastern Regions. It was withdrawn from service in March 1961 and was originally preserved at the Science Museum, London before moving to the National Railway Museum at York where it can now be seen.
