Introduced in Septembar 1961, this prototype locomotive was built by Brush Traction as a possible second generation Type 4 locomotive. Initially on loan, the loco was bought by BR in December 1970 and classified as Class 53 being allocated a new number of D1200. The loco was used on many lines on the BR system, until withdrawn from service in October 1975. It was cut up for scrap by J.Cashmore, Newport in March 1976.
