BRCW 'Lion' Prototype Type 4 Locomotive Profile

Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Prototype Type 4 Locomotive

Introduced in April 1962, this prototype locomotive was built by a collection of contractors, including BRCW, Sulzer and AEI, in the hope that the design would be adopted as the future standard type 4. However, this was not to be as the Brush Type 4, which became the future Class 47, was chosen instead. The loco, on loan to BR, was used on many lines on the BR system, until withdrawn from service in October 1963. It was cut up for scrap at the BRCW works a month later in November 1963.
