Introduced in 1965, for use on the newly electrified West Coast Main Line between London and Liverpool-Manchester-Birmingham, these locomotives still remain the main form of electric traction on these, and the London-Glasgow line, 33 years after their introduction. Since completion of the East Anglian electrification between London (Liverpool Street) and Norwich, a pool of locomotives has been formed at Norwich depot for use on these services. Three of the class have been withdrawn after collisions - 86429 was the first of the class to be condemmed on 30 April 1986, the other two being 86211 and 86239. The class has been divided into various sub-classes over the years, dedicated for use on passenger or freight. Currently there are 4 sub-classes:
Class 86/1 - These were rebuilt as prototypes for the Class 87 and are used on passenger services
Class 86/2 - These are standard 100mph locos for use on passenger services
Class 86/4 - These have been modified with SAB wheels and reused suspension and are used mainly on parcels and passenger trains
Class 86/6 - These are fitted with SAB wheels and are dedicated to rail freight operations, especially freightliners where they work in pairs.
