BR Class 85 Electric Locomotive Profile


BR Class 85

Introduced in September 1961, for the electrification of the London Midland Region, Manchester/Liverpool-London line, these locos were part of a quantity of 100 ordered from various builders. This batch of 40 were classified AL6 and built by British Railways. The design is basically the same as the other types, much of the equipment fitted was with experience gained from the previous Class81-84 locos. Withdrawals began in May 1983, with 85027. The final loco 85101 was withdrawn in November 1992 and is preserved. The remaining 39 were all cut up by the end of May 1994.

BUILT: 1961-64 at British Railways Doncaster Works.

ENGINE: 25 kV AC Overhead.

NUMBER SERIES: Between 85101-85114, 85001-85040.

PREVIOUS NUMBERS: Between E3056-E3095.

TRANSMISSION: Four AEI Traction Motors.

MAX SPEED: 80-100mph.

TRACTIVE EFFORT: 50,000lb.

WEIGHT: 83 tonnes.

WHEEL ARRANGEMENT: Bo-Bo.
