Introduced in December 1959, for the electrification of the London Midland Region, Manchester/Liverpool-London line, these locos were part of a quantity of 100 ordered from various builders. This batch of 25 were classified AL1 and ordered from AEI(BTH)/BRCW. The first loco for the New Railway was officially handed over on 27 November 1959. The final 2 locos (E3301, E3302) were to be constructed with freight gear ratios and classified Type B. However, this equipment was not fitted and the locos emerged as standard Type A locos. Withdrawals began in August 1968, with E3009, the final locos 81012/17 lasting until July 1991. E3003 (81002) is preserved.
