Class 74 Profile


British Railways Diesel/Electric Locomotive

Introduced in November 1967, this fleet of 10 diesel/electrics were rebuilt from Class 71 locomotives for use on the London-Bournemouth line electrification scheme of the mid-60s, on both passenger and freight trains, especially those operating to and from Southampton Docks. The first loco was withdrawn in June 1976, and of the 9 remaining locos, one was withdrawn in June 1977 with the remainder all being withdrawn in December 1977. All were cut up by January 1981.

REBUILT: 1967-68 by British Railways Crewe Works.

ENGINE: 750V dc or Diesel/Electric Paxman 6YJXL 650hp.

NUMBER SERIES: 74001-74010.

PREVIOUS NUMBERS: Between E6101-E6110.

TRANSMISSION: .

MAX SPEED: 90mph.

TRACTIVE EFFORT: 47,500lb (electric), 40,000lb (diesel).

WEIGHT: 86.25 tons.
