Introduced in 1961, these locomotives were built for mixed traffic (passenger and freight) on the Western Region of British Railways. Due to British Railway's policy to standardise on Diesel Electric locomotives, they were declared 'non-standard' and all were withdrawn from service by 1975, some only having a working life of 10 years.
