Class 29 Profile

North British Locomotive Company Type 2

Introduced in December 1958 as Class 21. Due to poor reliability 20 were rebuilt during 1965 with new power units and reclassified as Class 29. The locos were a fleet of Type 2 Locomotives ordered under British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. Initially an order of 10, a further 48 were ordered before any were delivered. They were ordered for use on the Eastern Region of BR but after a few months all were transferred to the Scottish Region where they spent the rest of their working lives. The first loco to be withdrawn in December 1968 was D6116 and the remainder had all been withdrawn by the end of December 1971. All were cut up for scrap by the end of November 1972.
