Class 26 Profile

Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Type 2

Ordered by the British Transport Commission under the British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan, these BRCW Type 2s were used on the Eastern and Scottish Regions of BR. The initial order was for 20 locos, but this was soon increased to 47. Subsequent locos were built using the Sulzer 6LDA28B power unit of 1,250hp and classified as Class 27. The first loco withdrawn was D5328 in July 1972 before receiving its TOPS number. The last 8 locos of the class were withdrawn on 4th October 1993. It is interesting to note that this class survived longer than the later and more powerful Class 27.
