This fleet of Type 2 locomotives were a subsequent build of the successful Class 24 1,160hp locomotives, of which the first 20 were ordered by the British Transport Commission under the British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. This build, introduced in April 1961, had detailed modifications and different internal equipment with the engine developing 1,250hp. Two different body designs were built, the latter design having a larger central cab window and many of the side grills being moved to the roof. Twelve locos were converted to Class 25/9 in the period November 1985 to January 1986. The first loco withdrawn was 25045 (D5195) in October 1975. The last locos of the class were withdrawn in March 1987.
