Class 23 Profile

Introduced in May 1959, this was a another small fleet of 10 Type 2 Locomotives ordered under British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. These locomotives were ordered for use on the Eastern Region where they spent all of their working lives. The locos proved problematic from the start, especially the Napier 'Baby Deltic' engine. During 1963 all were taken out of service for rebuilding which gave them a further 4-5 years of life. The first loco D5906, was withdrawn in September 1968 and the last one D5909 was withdrawn in March 1971. D5901 was transferred to departmental stock while the remainder were cut up for scrap by the end of October 1973.
