Class 22 Profile

Introduced in January 1959, this was a another fleet of Type 2 Locomotives ordered under British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. These diesel hydraulic locomotives were ordered for use on the Western Region where they spent all of their working lives. The locomotives were built to replace steam on secondary passenger and freight duties. Due to British Railway's policy to standardise on Diesel Electric locomotives, they were declared 'non-standard' and all were withdrawn from service, some only having a working life of 7 years. The first loco D6301, was withdrawn in December 1967 and the remainder had all been withdrawn by the end of January 1972. All were cut up for scrap by the end of November 1972.
