Introduced in 1961, the design was to be the new 'Standard Type 1' for use on British Railways. It differed from earlier Typ1 1' by having a central cab which gave good, all round visibility. However, the design proved to be a failure due to it being underpowered with poor engine reliabilty. All were withdrawn by the end of 1971, some only having a working life of 7 years. To compensate for the withdrawals, BR ordered a further 100 Class 20 English Electric Type 1s.
