Class 16 Profile


North British Locomotive Company Type 1

Introduced in May 1958, this was a another fleet of Type 1 Locomotives ordered under British Railways 1955 Modernisation Plan. They were only used on the Eastern Region of BR and spent their working life based at Stratford Depot (30A) in London. The first unit was withdrawn in February 1968 and all had been withdrawn by the end of September the same year. All were cut up for scrap by the end of 1969.

BUILT: 1958 by the North British Locomotive Company, Glasgow.

ENGINE: Paxman 16YHXL 800hp.

NUMBER SERIES: D8400-D8409.

PREVIOUS NUMBERS: Nil.

TRANSMISSION: Traction Motors.

MAX SPEED: 60mph.

TRACTIVE EFFORT: 42,000lb.
