Class 01 Profile


British Railways Diesel Shunter

Introduced in January 1956, this fleet of 5 shunters were a short wheelbase design constructed for use in areas with a restricted clearance or loading gauge. There were 2 locos numbered D2856, the latter one bring transferred from departmental stock in July 1967 (where it had Dept. No. 81) and renumbered, when the original D2856 was withdrawn in May 1966 (the first of the class to be withdrawn). The last members 01001 (11504) - see photo below, and 01002 lasted on the Holyhead Breakwater System, until withdrawn in September 1979 and March 1981 repectively. Two locos, D2953 and (the original) D2956 are preserved.
