Introduced in November 1950, the locomotives were built at BR Ashford and Brighton Locomotive Works. The locos were used on the Southern Region of BR before being transferred to the London Midland Region and worked alongside LMSR/BR prototype locos 10000 & 10001. All 3 were withdrawn in December 1963 and cut up for scrap by J.Cashmore Ltd., Tipton around 1968.
